A Letter to the Veterans

Dear Veterans,

On a day like Memorial its almost impossible not to think of you. Thoughts of sacrifice, fear, and pride run through my mind. I want to thank you for what you have done for me and my country. You changed everything. In this war the bravless became brave. The brave led the ones with the least courage. No matter who you were, men or women put their life on the line to protect the American people. You risked everything you had wheter you agreed with the fight or not. It was the fight that made you stronger. Although you faced hardships and watched your friends pass everyone one of you stayed strong, even if you lost something. A friend, a leg, a husband, a life.
This shows your pride for this country and it is something that no one can ignore. You bring a good name to the American Soilder. A fighter for those who cannot fight themselves. You will always be honored.

Thank You

Times of change for Thursday

Civilians in Vietnam suffered greatly.
They were innocently shot and killed
Toddlers, women and elders were killed.
If US troops found out that you had help the Vienamese they would kill you or hurt you
They took no sympathy

Times of Change for Wednsday

Jack Smith

What problems did he face in Vietnam?

- He was sent into action even though he wasnt experienced
- Bombs were dropped on their boats
- They faced death every day (body bags)
- Dirty, muddy, smelly soilders
- Bombarded with bullets.
- Had to bandage hurt friends
- Faked dead for saftey
- Was wounded by a grenade
- Hurt his right leg

His attituded changed towards war because he was angry that he had gone through that and all his friends had died. He was cynical. Changed his perspective on life. Learned how to accept pain.

I feel like im fixing to Die Rag

What is the song asking the “big strong men to do”? That the US needs help in vietnam. Leave college and join the army

… the “generals” to do? Go out and get those reds. (communism) They need to fight to the end

… “Wall Street” to do? Raise money. Supply army with tools.

… “mothers” to do? Help your sons go to Vietnam

Write down four specific lines from the song that display sarcasm, cynicism, or anti-war sentiment.

What are we fighting for? Dont ask me i dont give a damn

There aint no time to wonder why. Whoopie were all gonna die

The only good commie is the one whos dead

Were gonna have a whole lot of fun

Time of Change for Tuesday

A dubious crusade

1. Dubious - uncertain result, doubtful, questionable
2. Crusade - any vigorous, aggressive movement for the defense or advancement of an idea

It relates to it because it says that it was Dubious. We don't really know why we got in the war or when it started so it is defined as "questionable" Also with the large loss of life the citizens were upset and questioned the governments judgment. Also it is said the we got in the war to show that the US was invincible and it showed authority. That supports the crusade title because it was a movement for an idea (invincible) The unit will try to show why we got in the war.

History

The theme of the poem is like a chain reaction, and the problems in Asia

Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

1. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution is contreversial
2. President Johnson used military action in Asia without declaring war
3. The thesis is supported by saying that many think that the presidents action in the time are responsible for our deep involvement in the vietnam war

Although African Americans and other minorities are striving in todays society compared to previous years they have not nearly reached their full potential. Minorites still a ways to go in their fight for equality.
Look at the statistics things have improved. The unemployment rate (percentage) in Blacks has lowered from 14.3 (1980) to 10.8 percent (2004) Although a small change in numbers it results in a big step for African Americans. Other minorities like hispanics have also improved in unemployment by lowering their 1980 statistic (10.1) to (7.0) in 2004. Asians have an even lower unemployment rate than whites. (4.4 v.s. 4.8)
Although Blacks have lowered their unemployment rate slightly their 2004 stat ( 10.8) doesnt compare to the (4.8) percent of whites unemployed. It is clear that blacks are behind in the race, having the highest unemployement over whites, hispanics, and asians
Something needs to be done. We need to make sure there is no segregation in the work place and all should have equal opportunitys not matter what race. Minimum wage should be hired and we should see what everyone is good at and help them find jobs. Job agencys can help out.

MLK I Have a Dream

Why does the author feel that whites owe King the greatest debt?
MLK did most for the rights because he freed them from the judgement of race.
Was King "the right man at the right time"?

When the nation was fighting to end racism all of the things being done revolved around him. Without MLK it would not have been the same.
Would King be upset with the current use of his most often quoted line? Why or why not?

Yes, becuase people are remebering his legacy and what he fought for. No, becuase it is being used in the wrong context, which gives the idea that MLK would support the things its being used for
